This ruling relates to the case of Raphael Pirker and his flight of a small UAV over the University of Virginia Campus in 2011. The F-35C Lightning II carrier variant Joint Strike Fighter conducted its first carrier-based night flight operations aboard an aircraft carrier off the coast of San Diego last week.
