Event Gets Underway Thursday
The 30th annual Women in Aviation International conference gets underway Thursday in Long Beach, CA.
Thousands of women from all over the world who work in all aspects of aviation – from airline pilots to astronauts, from aviation historians to military pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers and more are expected to attend.
The 2019 roster of speakers includes:
- Heidi Cappozi, The Boeing Company senior vice president of human resources and member of Boeing’s Executive Committee
- Nagin Cox, NASA/JPL tactical mission lead on the Mars Curiosity Rover
- Dr. Christine Darden, aeronautical engineer and NASA sonic boom minimization expert
- Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX president and chief operating officer
- Capt. Tammie Jo Shults, U.S Navy and Southwest Airlines pilot
- Dr. Ellen Stofan, Smithsonian Air and Space Museum director
Girls in Aviation Day Long Beach takes place on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the Long Beach Convention Center with approximately 250 girls ages 8 to 17 from the Long Beach area being introduced to the career and lifestyle possibilities available in aviation.
Lt. General Stayce Harris is the Girls in Aviation Day luncheon speaker. Based in Washington, D.C., she is the Inspector General of the Air Force, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force who will retire on March 1, 2019, as the highest ranking African-American woman military pilot in the United States armed forces. Following her military retirement, she will join United Airlines as a pilot.
Jessica Cox, the first armless pilot in aviation history, will also speak to the girls during lunch.
Girls will take part in activities as well as the opportunity to meet role models and learn about the exciting world of airplanes and aviation.
