110 Lucky Pax Escape Sierra Leone Crash

Air Guinea 737 ditches in swamp few moments after takeoff, nothing more than minor injuries

Talk about a lucky hundred or so passengers... On Friday, an Air Guinea 737 took off from Lungi Airport in Freetown, Sierra Leone with 110 passengers and crew. Soon after takeoff, the aircraft lost altitude and plowed into a swamp some three miles from the airport.

When authorities and emergency rescue personnel reached the aircraft, they found it with one wing submerged in the swamp... and all 110 passengers safe and sound. Some fifty of the passengers were treated for shock and minor injuries.

"A combined team of airport fire and security services quickly moved to the scene and helped to save the passengers and crew," airport spokesman Mohamed Swarray said. Sierra Leone's CAA stated that the crash is under investigation and the cause is not known as of yet.
