Savannah Tower Evacuated

The Elevator Wouldn't Go All The Way To The Top

The tower at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport was evacuated Friday night after electrical problems stranded two controllers in the elevator.

The two controllers were in the elevator at 2150 local when the lift stopped and the tower began to fill with smoke. There was no fire -- however, the tower crew was evacuated as a precaution.

Firefighters combed the structure, but found no fire. No flights were affected as a result of the scare and controllers were allowed back into the tower at 2305. No one was hurt.

As for the unfortunate controllers, they were stuck in the elevator for about an hour before they were rescued by firefighters.
