FAA Opens Thousands Of Air Traffic Control Jobs

Virtual Career Fair Set For Wednesday

The FAA has opened up several thousand air traffic controllers positions in anticipation of hiring as many as 10,000 controllers over the next 10 years, and as many as 6,000 by 2019.

Forbes reports that the positions went live Monday online, and the FAA will be accepting applications through February 24, with a virtual career fair set for Wednesday, February 12.

Those who apply will have to be available to start training before they turn 31 years old, and be willing to relocate to wherever the FAA needs to place controllers. According to the FAA, applicants will need “three years of progressively responsible work experience, or a Bachelor’s degree, or a combination of education and work experience that totals three years.”

Trainees who began working last year earned nearly $18,000 while they were in training, with starting salaries averaging $37,070. Beyond that, the pay can range up to $171,340 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, depending on experience and location.

The FAA often recruits from military or air traffic programs offered by colleges, so the public openings are not very common, according to Forbes.
