Printer Glitch Causes ATC Delays In Southern Florida

Controllers Unable To Print Flight Info

Five days after a severed telecommunications cable led to problems for Air Route Traffic Control Centers in Miami and Puerto Rico, a computer glitch at another facility in Miami caused grief on Monday.

Like last week's incident, the glitch causes problems for controllers tracking planes operating in the flight levels over South Florida.

The Miami Herald reports a printer control unit failed, resulting in controllers not being able to print out flight planning information for flights within their jurisdiction.

The FAA says a backup system quickly kicked in... but not before 10 flights in the region were temporarily held on the ground, while those flights in the air could not land. That caused delays at airports in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Palm Beach.

Fortunately, this glitch only lasted approximately 20 minutes. Within an one hour after the problem cropped up, the FAA says, operations were back to normal.
