eFusion Electric Airplane Down In Hungary

Two On Board Fatally Injured In The Accident

The eFusion electric airplane being developed by a collaboration between Siemens and Magnus went down in Hungary last Thursday, resulting in the fatal injury of the two occupants on board.

Hungarian police said in a report that the airplane impacted terrain about 650 feet from Pécs-Pogány Airport under unknown circumstances, there was a post-impact fire.

Szalanta is a village located about three miles south of the Pecs-Pogany runway. The airplane was "maneuvering", according to a report posted by the Flight Safety foundation.

"A tragic accident with two casualties happened yesterday in Hungary to an airplane [with] our electric propulsion," said Frank Anton, head of eAircraft at Siemens. "Our deepest thoughts are with the families and friends of the casualties,” he says. “We cannot speculate on causes yet. We (will) work closely with the authorities investigating the cause.”

The eFusion is an experimental all-electric aircraft. It uses Siemens’ new SP55D electric motor and a FlyEco diesel engine.

eFusion was introduced at AERO Friedrichshafen in 2016. It is described as a  two-seat, all-electric, low-wing monoplane. It is based on the Magnus Fusion light-sport airplane. It is entirely battery-powered and has an endurance of about one hour flight time.
