Tomcat Tail Travels To The Emerald Isle

Wreckage Came From 2003 Mishap Near FL

It's travelled a long way... the tail section of a US Navy F-14 Tomcat (file photo of type, below) that went down during a training mission three-and-a-half years ago off Key West, FL. Last Friday, a man walking along the beach found the piece of wreckage.

That's not very ususual -- except the beach retired airline captain Charlie Coughlan was walking on was in Ireland, 4,900 miles away from Florida.

The Irish Examiner newspaper reports currents from the Gulf of Mexico may have floated the almost 10-foot-long triangular piece of one of the Tomcat's two vertical stabs to the back in West Cork, on the southern shores of Ireland.

On Tuesday, the Navy confirmed that, based on markings still visible on the wreckage, that it had come from the downed F-14, which went down October 3, 2002. Both crew members ejected safely.
