Inventor Patents Airliner Safety System

Entire Cabin Would Detach And Be Lowered To The Ground By Parachute

A YouTube video is making the rounds on the Internet that shows an intriguing way to save persons on board a doomed airliner.

The theory is rather like a full-airframe parachute for GA airplanes writ large. Inventor Vladimir Tatarenko's invention would allow the entire cabin of an airliner to detach from the nose and wings and be lowered to the ground by parachutes. The cabin would land softly on either land or water.

But is it practical? Tech Insider reports that with the average chance of being fatally injured in an accident involving an airliner standing at about 11 million to one, it is unlikely that the world's airliner builders would undertake such a radical re-design of their products. With a Boeing 737, as an example, having somewhere in the neighborhood of 373,000 individual parts, such a redesign would likely be very cost-prohibitive to reduce the already-very-slight chance of being killed in an aviation accident.

Still, give him props for thinking outside the box. Full-airframe parachutes have been credited with saving hundreds of lives in the GA segment, and we hope they only grow in popularity with manufacturers.
