LAX Blackout Causes Delays

Some 100 Flights Delayed

Well, sure you can fly in the dark. But can passengers board the plane?

A brief blackout disrupted about 100 flights at Los Angeles International Airport Monday, after a power line apparently failed for about 10 seconds. But the loss of power was felt for more than two hours.

"The cause is blamed on equipment failure" in a 34.5 kilovolt supply line, according to LA Water and Power spokeswoman Carol Tucker.

The power interruption knocked out all phones, radios and radars within the air traffic control operation at LAX. Several flights were left in holds.

Even after the lights went back on, the remaining equipment outages forced cancellation of all instrument approaches. Fortunately, the weather was good enough for visual approaches.
