Unexpected Flyover Frightens Some New Yorkers

Roar Of Jets Prompts Calls To Emergency Hotline

The unexpected roar of jet engines over Manhattan was enough to send many New Yorkers to the phones Thursday.

New York's 1010 WINS reports city officials told many people who flooded the city's 311 hotline the noise came as part of a flyover during the city's annual Fleet Week.

The US Navy, however, says the noise was actually caused by members of its Blue Angels precision flying team, flying over the city advertising its Memorial Day show at Jones Beach.

(As the Navy is, of course, a major participant in Fleet Week -- after all, that branch handles much of said "fleet" -- it's conceivable the two events were related.)

Despite the confusion over where the noise came from... the jets that buzzed Manhattan were friendlies, and authorities say there was no cause for alarm.
