Search For Air Crew Lost Off Colombian Coast Called Off

Sources within the US Navy have told Aero-News search and rescue efforts for a SH-60B Seahawk helicopter (file photo of type, below) and its crew lost off the western coast of Colombia this weekend have been terminated.

The helicopter, assigned to the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 48 based at Naval Station Mayport, FL, went down December 13 in international waters while conducting counter-narcotics and anti-terrorism operations off the Colombian coast.

The helicopter was within sight of the frigate USS DeWert when it went down, according to a spokesman for Naval Station Mayport. The DeWert's unit usually carries out anti-drug missions in international waters, according to the LA Times.

SAR operations officially ended yesterday, according to the Navy, after exhaustive efforts by U.S. and Colombian Navy air and surface assets failed to retrieve any sign of the wreckage.

The names of the three crew members are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
