Blue Skies, Gentle Breezys Expected At AirVenture 2007

That's Not A Typo

Are you a Breezy enthusiast, or did you ever build or ride in a Breezy? Have you ever donned the goggles and received a free Breezy ride at an EAA convention in Rockford or Oshkosh? Then you'll want to get to Oshkosh this year... as AirVenture 2007 celebrates the Breezy's impact on individuals, and the homebuilt aircraft movement.

The Breezy is one of the most universally recognized aircraft to emerge from EAA and the homebuilt movement. Carl Unger's first red and white prototype first appeared at the 1965 Rockford EAA Convention and Fly-In, where it created a sensation when he gave people rides from morning until night. The red-vested pilot has been providing Breezy rides every year since.

The prototype, designed and built with Charles Roloff and Bob Liposky, used a set of Piper PA-12 wings and a factory-new Continental C-90-8 engine with a special pusher crank. After 25 years of flying it, Carl flew his Breezy to EAA's Pioneer Airport in Oshkosh one last time before retiring the famous homebuilt to the EAA AirVenture Museum in October 1990.

Many thousands of people flew with Carl in the Breezy -- including an FAA Administrator, Sen. Barry Goldwater, actor Cliff Robertson, and an entire Concorde crew.

Carl's son, Rob Unger, is organizing a special Breezy banquet during EAA AirVenture on Wednesday, July 25. The banquet will be held on the convention grounds in the Honda Forums Plaza, and Carl will be the guest of honor. Activities will include a Breezy history presentation, guest speakers, and an open forum. wants to invite any Breezy enthusiast or those people his father directly impacted over the years with a ride in the Breezy at convention.

"I meet people all the time who Dad has given rides to," Rob said. "My hope is that a lot of Breezy enthusiasts can make it to this special event and share their personal stories about the ride they received from him while at the EAA convention."

Carl will also be the guest speaker at the annual Homebuilder's dinner held on Thursday, July 26. Tickets for the Homebuilder's dinner can be purchased from the Homebuilders HQ building on the flight line during convention.

Breezy owners who plan to fly into AirVenture this year will receive special parking in the homebuilt aircraft parking area. Those interested in attending the Breezy banquet July 25 should contact Rob Unger at the FMI link below for ticket information.
