Freak Helicopter Accident Near Brazil Kills Five

Offshore Oil Helicopter Hits Ship's Mast, Sinks

A helicopter contracted to Brazil's state-run oil company, Petrobras, crashed into the sea Saturday, killing the pilot, co-pilot and three passengers on board. Executives from BHS, the charter company which owned the aircraft, said that the helicopter, acting as a personnel shuttle between offshore oil platforms and the city of Campos, was trying to land on an offshore rig when it lost its tail rotor and plunged into the ocean below.

However, a Petrobras spokesman says the helicopter struck the mast of a ship operating in the area, hit the water and sank immediately. The bodies of those on board were found almost 2700 feet below the ocean's surface. The Brazilian Navy plans to raise the wreckage sometime in the coming week.
