Airborne 05.29.19: RedBull Kaput, Martin Jetpack, EAA Supports Vets

Also: Air Trophy-Greenland, 'Racist' Call Signs, Apollopalooza, Hangzhou Capitalizes, Strike Fighter Squadron 101

As Airborne was being produced, we received word that Red Bull has pulled the plug on their Air Race program... we'll have more on this in our next episode.

The Martin Aircraft Company has closed its doors and put its warehouse up for lease. The Martin Jetpack was once touted as the next wave of personal aviation. But the New Zealand company has burned through more than $50 million in its investor's money. In 2010, Martin Aircraft Company was rated by Time Magazine as one of the world's top 50 "most anticipated" inventions. But the "jetpack" ... which actually used a pair of ducted fans to provide lift and thrust, has been eclipsed by the large number of personal eVTOL aircraft that are currently under development. Jetpack inventor Glenn Martin quit the company five years ago. Now, some 300 companies are developing personal aircraft. EAA joined 13 other aviation organizations in jointly opposing a bill in the House of Representatives that includes a cap on flight training benefits available to United States military veterans. H.R.1947, the bill in question, caps payments for flight training programs and virtually guarantees that US veterans seeking to use their GI Bill benefits to pursue a career as a professional pilot will not have the necessary funds provided to complete flight training. Other degree programs at public colleges or universities are not capped in a similar manner, meaning fields involving flight training are unfairly disadvantaged. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
