Joint Base Lewis-McChord Mulls Airshow Cancellation

Planning Stopped For The Show, Which Would Be The First Since 2012

Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State recently announced plans to hold an airshow at the base in August for the first time since 2012, but for now, the base has shelved those plans.

And while the Air Force has not received an official notice from the base cancelling the show, and an appearance by the Thunderbirds precision demonstration team, a base spokesman told the News Tribune newspaper that "planning is currently stopped for the 2016 JBLM airshow."

A spokesman for the Thunderbirds said that because they have not received official notice of the cancellation the show is "on the schedule and we're still planning on attending the airshow."

The show is on the two-year schedule released last year. The paper reports that past air shows at McChord Air Field have drawn as many as 375,000 to the base in 2008. The last show, which featured the Thunderbirds, drew about 150,000, and the military has since passed over the base in its annual air show plans.

But residents in the area will still have one certain shot at seeing a military demonstration team this summer. The Blue Angels are slated to perform, as they regularly do, at the Seattle Seafare August 6 and 7.
