AMA Drone Report 05.16.19: FAA Memorandum, Spark 2?, Illegal Anti-Drone Ops?

Also: FAA UAS Symposium, Alpha Electro, Osmo Action Camera, Hummingbird Robot

The net has been awash with copies of a memorandum that may foretell the future of the UAS community.

This memorandum was intended as FAA guidance to educate air traffic control facilities (ATC) on best methods to respond to recreational flyers seeking authorization, not as guidance to recreational operators. Recent legislation under Section 349 (c) states operators in controlled airspace will be required to seek authorization from towered airports, unless flying from a charted flying site. AMA successfully championed that if you are flying at an AMA flying field or sanctioned event, you can continue flying by following AMA’s safety program and within the existing agreements your club or contest director has with nearby airports. DJI introduced the Spark drone back in 2017, and a follow-on aircraft may be among the next announcements from the Chinese dronemaker. Drone DJ reports that it has information leaked by a DJI insider that the company is developing a Spark 2 drone that it may release as soon as July. The new drone will likely address some of the connectivity issues experienced with the original Spark drone, according to the report, but observers say they do not expect the Spark 2 to receive DJI's OcuSync 2.0 software. Questions have arisen over the use of anti-drone jamming technology during the recent Ultra Music Festival in south Florida. A company called "Rational Point" said that it, along with its partners Vigilant Drone Defense and Pemica provided counter-UAV services to protect the Ultra Music Festival from ‘unauthorized’ drones. The company claims they were able to "intercept a total of 61 drones that were attempting to enter the secure airspace above the festival. All 61 drones that were intercepted were visually confirmed intercepts. During our three days of service, no unauthorized drones were able to penetrate the secure airspace protecting the Ultra Music Festival." All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
