Fourth Time's A Charm? SpaceX To Attempt 4th Ocean Landing

Will Follow Feb 24 Launch Of Communications Satellite From Cape Canaveral

SpaceX will make a fourth attempt to land a Falcon 9 booster on an automated barge in the ocean following the launch of the SES-9 satellite currently planned for next week.

The launch is planned from Cape Canaveral in Florida, with Feb 25 set as a backup date, according to an SES news release.

The News Independent website reports that SpaceX is in the process of conducting technical tests and pre-flight validations. But the fuel required for the orbital insertion mission will not leave enough reserve to return the booster to the SpaceX landing facility in Florida, so the barge will once again be launched in an attempt to recover the Falcon 9 rocket.

The most recent attempt to land a booster on a barge in the Pacific ocean failed when suspected ice buildup during a launch in heavy fog prevented one of the rocket's landing legs from locking properly into place, and it collapsed after touchdown.
