Canadian Man Takes Very Short Joyride In Float Plane

Person Flying The Plane Was Not A Licensed Pilot

A joyride in a Cessna 180 float plane came to a very quick end last week, but fortunately the two people on board the aircraft were not seriously injured.

Metronews Canada reports that the person flying the plane was a 32-year-old man who was not a licensed pilot. He had a 59-year-old relative on board with him in the plane.

The RCMP reports that the person who took the plane is a relative of its owner, who does not want him charged with theft. He does face several other charges, however, including flying without a license, dangerous operation of an aircraft, and obstructing a police officer. He was described as being "familiar" with the plane's operation.

The plane took off from a local body of water called Mitchell's Pond on the west coast of Newfoundland at about 1900 local time Thursday. The flight ended when the plane went down in some trees less than half a mile from the pond.

The older man was wearing a seatbelt. He suffered a bump on his head. The person flying the airplane also suffered minor injuries and was taken to jail. He was not cooperating with police, according to the report.
