Airborne 09.06.16: Balloon Retrenchment, Streamlined Certification, A-10 Pilots

In the wake of a tragic balloon accident that occurred near Maxwell, Texas, which took 16 lives, the Balloon Federation of America has created what they’re calling the 2016 BFA/FAA Action Plan.

This extensive plan addresses new numerous aspects of balloon operation. In a press release from the BFA, they say that in the last few years the BFA has, through its Professional Ride Operator’s Division, developed a suite of Best Practices designed to establish a common operational foundation for all major ride operators. GAMA issued a statement welcoming the publication of a collaboration strategy by authorities in the world’s four leading states of design to streamline the certification process among their regulatory agencies. By adopting this strategy, the Certification Management Team, which includes the FAA and other international aviation regulating organizations, is establishing a framework for risk-based validation principles that encourages one another to accept the original authority’s certifications of new products and technologies without requiring redundant technical evaluation. The U.S. Air Force has grounded four A-10 Thunderbolt pilots after they made a low pass over Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina last week. Television station WNCN reports that the jets flew low over several downtown buildings in Charlotte, including the stadium, which generated a complaint to the FAA. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
