AMA Drone Report 01.16.20: Remote ID Opposition, DRL Tryouts, Karma Updated

Also: Super Bowl LIV Regs, Drone-Based Home Security, Unlawful Drone Ops, Red Cat Acquisition

With the recent announcement of a Model Aircraft Political Action Committee and dozens of negative comments on the Remote ID proposal put forth by the FAA, as well as other issues, the model aviation community clearly has some problems with recent FAA actions.

Comments and complaints about the FAA’s change in tactics are all over Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other Social Media outlets, and it's pretty clear that the model aviation community feels threatened and at risk. Even members of the full-scale aviation community are expressing concern, with recent support for model concerns shown by the EAA... who has been vocal and active in these issues. Want to try out for the Drone Racing league in the comfort of your home? Now’s your chance to become a DRL pilot without having to travel. Anyone with a computer can download the DRL SIM, enter Tryouts and play to become a pro. And, for the first time ever, DRL is giving away $75K in total prizes throughout this two-month tournament. How? Starting on Feb 3rd, you can download the software and register online. GoPro has updated the firmware for its Karma drones. Multiple pilots reported that on January 1, 2020, their aircraft were unable to correctly receive GPS signals required to calibrate the internal compass on the drone, effectively grounding the aircraft. "If you’ve been unable to fly your Karma over the last few days, fear not! We’ve identified the cause and a fix is in the works," GoPro said in a statement posted on its website. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
