Kansas Officials Mull New Airport Near Kansas City

Would Compete With Kansas City International Airport

Officials in Kansas are reportedly looking into the possibility of building a new airport near Kansas City, MO to compete with Kansas City International Airport (KMCI).

The website JW World reports that Kansas Governor Sam Brownback told the Kansas City Star that the state is looking at constructing a new airport on the Kansas side of the border between Kansas and Missouri.

The idea surfaced after talks about renovating KMCI and combining all of its gates into a single terminal broke down. Brownback said in an email to the paper that airlines "are requesting construction of a new single terminal airport at Kansas City International, and the state of Kansas is continually looking for new economic development opportunities." He said that more than half of the passengers at KMCI come from Kansas, and "we are exploring the possibilities of this project."

Of course, building a new airport is expensive, and takes years to complete. FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said that no formal proposals for the new airport have been submitted to the agency.
