Island Airlines Shutters Its Operation

Served The Resort Island Of Nantucket, MA

Island Airlines, which has been flying for 24 years to the island of Nantucket, abruptly closed its doors Friday. The closure also affects Cape & Island Air Freight.

In a statement on the airline's website, the company apologized for the abrupt closure.

"It is with great sadness that we are forced to announce that Island Airline and Cape & Islands Air Freight will be closing its doors effective immediately," the notice on the website said. "It has been a pleasure to serve the Nantucket community for over 24 years, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to our loyal customers. We would like to extend our deepest thanks for your business and support."

While no reason was given for the move, a Massachusetts transportation official told the Cape Cod Times that the company was expected to file for bankruptcy.

The Associated Press reports that the airline operated eight Cessna airplanes capable of carrying eight or nine passengers each.

Only Cape Air now offers flights between Hyannis and Nantucket.
