Air Show Had Originally Been Scheduled For Sept. 25-27
It has become a viciously repetitive story... as one airshow after another falls prey to the COVID-19 Pandemic... and at a time when we all hoped that we'd be past all this by now. One of the latest victims is what has been called the single largest military airshow in the business... the Miramar Air Show.
This year's 2020 Miramar Air Show had originally been scheduled for this Sept. 25-27, but was cancelled after Col. Charles B. Dockery, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, decided that the health risks were simply too great.
A twitter post dropped the news earlier this past week... "Due to the continuing spread and health concerns of #COVID19, @MCASMiramarCA must formally announce the cancellation of the 2020 Miramar Air Show. It is a disappointment to us as well as many across the world, but the safety of our Marines and fellow San Diegans must come first."
In a public statement, Col Dockery added that, “The Miramar Air Show brings in aviation enthusiasts from all across the United States and from every corner of the world... While we had initially hoped to host the show and help usher in a re-opened San Diego, there are still a great many risks posed with a mass gathering of this size and scale to do it in a way that ensures our guests’ absolute safety."
The Miramar Air Show regularly draws over half a million people, so the Colonel surmised that, “It remains a prudent choice to look ahead to 2021 and make it better than ever.”
All is not lost, however; as a subsequent tweet disclosed that the MCAS Miramar team has some idea for attempting to salvage what they can from this fall... "Even with this cancellation, our team at the #1Airshow hopes to bring something special for you later this fall. It won’t be the show we’ve all come to know, but we will bring the best of Marine aviation and our civilian performers to you this September. Stand by for #2020Vision"
