Skydiver Fatally Injured In 1,200-Foot Fall

Witnesses Say His Reserve Chute Deployed While Onboard The Airplane

A man participating in a military-style parachute jump in Marion County, FL Friday was fatally injured after being pulled out of the airplane.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the accident occurred Friday afternoon at about 5:30 at Marion County Airport at Dunnellon Field (X35), according to Marion County Sheriff's spokeswoman Valerie Strong.

Strong said that the person who was fatally injured was an experienced skydiver and jumpmaster who trains others in military techniques. Witnesses said that his reserve chute deployed while he was kneeling at the door of the airplane, which pulled him from the aircraft. He hit the side of the plane and he fell to the ground, according to witnesses. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not known if the main parachute, which normally in such a jump would have been activated by a static line, deployed after he exited the aircraft.
