USAF Grounds 30 C130s

UK Won't Follow Suit -- For Now

The USAF has grounded 30 of its oldest C130 Hercules transports and has restricted the flight of another 60 after the discovery of wing stress cracks that were reportedly much more severe than anticipated.

The move affects approximately a dozen C130 E models in Iraq, but will not deter the war effort, according to USAF Chief of Staff John Jumper. He told reporters those aircraft will be replaced.

"This termination will have no impact on the Air Force's tactical airlift capabilities since there are a large number of C-130s in the current inventory with many years of service life remaining," the Bush administration said in a recent report to Congress.

In the meantime, British officials said they would not follow suit and ground their K models, in spite of the still-mysterious crash of one such aircraft in Iraq two weeks ago. Nine RAF airmen and one SAS troop were killed in the accident. Iraqi insurgents produced a videotape purportedly showing them shooting down the RAF Herc.
