A320 Pilot Landing At Gatwick Reports Nearby Drone

Says He Had To Take Evasive Action To Avoid A Collision

The U.K Airprox Board (UKAB) revealed at its August meeting that an A320 with 186 passengers on board was forced to take evasive action to avoid hitting a drone while on approach to Gatwick Airport.

According to the UKAB, The A320 pilot reported that while in the final stages of an ILS approach to RW26 at Gatwick, he saw a dark colored drone ahead. The pilot entered a right bank of between 5-8° to avoid a collision.

The reported drone was being flown above the maximum permitted height of 400ft and within controlled airspace such that it was endangering other aircraft at that location, according to the board.

The pilot reported a horizontal separation of 80-100 feet with the unmanned aircraft. The risk of collision was rated at "medium".

According to the UKAB, The Board considered that the pilot’s overall account of the incident portrayed a situation where although safety had been reduced, avoiding action was able to be taken.

It was not reported which airline was operating the flight.
