P&W To Provide PurePower Engines On MRJ Aircraft For JAL

Company Will Also Provide Fleet Management Support For The Engine

Pratt & Whitney PurePower engines will provide exclusive power for 32 Mitsubishi Regional Jets (MRJ) under an agreement announced by Japan Airlines (JAL) and Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation. PW1200G engines will power the aircraft and Pratt & Whitney will provide fleet management support services for the engines. Pratt & Whitney was previously selected as the exclusive engine provider for the MRJ.

“We’re very excited to introduce the MRJ and Geared Turbofan engine as our next generation regional aircraft fleet solution,” said Yoshiharu Ueki, president, Japan Airlines. “We believe the GTF engine technology will deliver strong cash operating cost improvements, environmental benefits and become a key enabler to our future regional network strategy.”

“Japan Airlines and Pratt & Whitney have shared a remarkable history together for more than 60 years and we’re pleased to continue this relationship with the MRJ powered by PurePower engines,” said Greg Gernhardt, president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines. “Working closely with Mitsubishi Aircraft to bring Japan’s commercial jet transport to the skies gives us an immense feeling of pride. We are confident that our PW1200G engine will exceed MRJ operator expectations to not only reduce noise and environmental footprints, but also cut operational costs through reduced fuel consumption.”
