Air Canada Pilots Association Elects New Chair Of Governing Council

Capt. Matt Hogan Will Assume The Position March 1

The Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA), the nation's largest single pilot group, yesterday elected Captain Matt Hogan as Chair at a Special Meeting of its Master Elected Council (MEC) in Toronto. The one-year term will run from March 1, 2018 until March 31, 2019.

Captain Hogan (pictured) replaces outgoing MEC Chair, Captain Kevin Vaillant, who announced his resignation from the position last December.

"I got involved with ACPA because I believe the organization helps us do our jobs better," said Captain Hogan. "I thank the MEC for the confidence they have shown in me, and I look forward to working with my fellow elected representatives, our members, and Air Canada to advance the pilot profession and safety of the flying public at home and abroad."

Captain Matt Hogan is an A320 Captain based in Toronto. A Nationally Elected Member of the MEC and former Vice-Chair of the Toronto Local Elected Council, Captain Hogan brings a wealth of experience to the role of MEC Chair. He has served on a number of ACPA committees over the years, including Governance and Constitution, Nominating, Occupational Health and Safety, and Member Services. Most recently, as Interim Chair of ACPA's Flight Safety Division in 2017, Captain Hogan presented to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. He began his career as an air ambulance pilot, first on turboprops – and later Learjets – before joining Air Canada as a First Officer on the A320 in 2007.

As Chair, Captain Hogan will preside over MEC meetings and act as the pilots' principal representative to Air Canada on employment matters, including negotiation and administration of their collective agreement. The Chair speaks on behalf of the MEC, and he/she or his/her delegate is the official spokesperson for ACPA. The Chair works with the Association's Chief Executive Officer, Milt Isaacs, to pursue ACPA's objectives and policies.

The MEC is ACPA's governing body, directing both policy and administration of the Association. In addition to the Chair, the MEC is composed of Local Elected Council Chairs and Vice-Chairs who are elected by pilots from home bases in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Winnipeg, as well as Nationally MEC Members, who are chosen by all Air Canada pilots in national elections.
