Airborne 12.16.16: Amazon Prime Air, Saving Santa Monica, Thunderbird Report

Also: AguaDrone, The KSMO Debacle, King Air 350, Airport Lawsuit, Gray Eagle ER, Southwest-Cuba, Trump Tweets v JSF

Amazon has just announced, and produced an informational video, about their first actual drone delivery of a product.

They’re calling the service Amazon Prime Air and they are referring to this first delivery as the initiation of their beta-testing program. They say that Prime Air is a delivery system designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles. In their press release, Amazon claims their Prime Air has great potential to enhance the services they already provide to millions of customers by providing rapid parcel delivery that will also increase the overall safety and efficiency of the transportation system. The tumultuous fight for the future of Santa Monica Airport has been going on for years, but it has now taken a turn that is unique, and ugly. Unable to simply shut the airport down because of the requirement to comply with FAA rules regarding commitments made through federal funding, the city fathers have now decided to make it impossible for legitimate businesses to continue on the airport. It’s a clear case of strangling free enterprise in such an overt way that it’s hard to believe anyone can sit on the sidelines and not realize how un-American the actions against Santa Monica Airport have become. We at ANN are not satisfied with simply watching this battle unfold; we are heading to the front lines to join the battle. Aero-News, its Aero-TV/Airborne program team, and its documentary arm TANSTAAFL, propose to set up operations this spring, circumstances permitting, in Santa Monica, using a number of tools, venues, and programs to bring attention, drama, urgency, accuracy, context, and a sharp focus to the Santa Monica airport dilemma. On June 2nd, of this year, a US Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 fighter lost power at low altitude and crash on open ground south of Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. The pilot ejected safely, but the aircraft was destroyed. Now we know what caused the accident. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
