Spencer Suderman Will Attempt To Break His Own Inverted Flat Spin Record

Will Begin Preparing In February For Attempt In Late 2017, Early 2018

Spencer Suderman has informed ANN that he plans to make a third ... and final ... attempt at the world record for the number of turns in an inverted flat spin either late next year or early in 2018.

The airshow performer sent an email to ANN outlining his plans. "I just acquired the plane for this..a Pitts S-1c with an O-360 engine," he wrote. The goal is to climb to 30,000' and spin 120 times!"

Suderman told ANN that the The airplane will arrive in CA in early February to begin preparations for a late 2017/early 2018 attempt. "I am currently working with both NAF El Centro and MCAS Yuma to determine the precise location and dates. The engine will be sent to Penn Yan Aero to be torn down and rebuilt with a Supercharger setup to provide sea level performance into the flight levels.

"Electroair will provide their STC'd electronic ignition which was the critical success factor in increasing performance to achieve the last two records in a normally aspirated certified Pitts S-2B and the experimental Sunbird S-1x, a Pitts S1 with an O-540 Lycoming engine.

"This next record is about pushing innovative aircraft technologies to their limit." he wrote. "The aircraft will reduce it's weight with an EarthX Motorsports Lithium Iron Battery weighing only 4 lbs. and Micro-Aerodynamics will provide vortex generators to ensure the flight controls remain effective in the flight levels."

Suderman previously set the record in March of 2016, completing 98 turns after starting at an altitude of 24,600 feet. The attempt in March broke his own world record of 81 turns sent in 2014, according to the Guinness organization.
