Tom Cruise Vs. Drones In 'Top Gun 2'

Actor Would Reprise His 'Maverick' Role In Sequel ... If It's Made

It was inevitable, we suppose, that Hollywood would jump on the UAV bandwagon and make a movie in which they are the central focus.

And so, a sequel to "Top Gun" is in the works, in which Tom Cruise will reprise his role as "Maverick" ... only this time, in "Top Gun 2: Danger Zone", the cocky fighter jock won't be battling MiGs, he'll be working with drones.

What is not clear is whether the UAVs will be the good guys, bad guys, or both. Details of the plot of the sequel are pretty scarce.

Wired.co.uk reports that the sequel has been batted around since 2010, with Cruise originally only in a small role, but now he's apparently set for the lead. Paramount Pictures CEO David Ellison said that the world of "dogfighting" has changed, and the movie will focus on the changing world of Naval aviation and the increasing role unmanned or remotely piloted aircraft play in that world. And "there is no Top Gun without Maverick," he said.

A script is under development, but there is has been production schedule or release date announced. Ellison said on a tour promoting the movie Terminator Genisys that he hopes to make the movie "very soon."
