Jeppesen Rolls Out Portable Information Management System

Expands Online Training Products

By Maxine Scheer

Jeppesen made a number of announcements today at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh of new products and alliances.  Jeppesen, along with SOLIDFX and iREX, developed a portable aviation information management product, providing pilots the ability to read Jeppesen’s Electronic Terminal Charts with a one-pound, portable e-reader device.

Navigational charts, displayed on the FX10 tablet, give quick and easy access to approach, departure, terminal arrival routes and airport diagrams.  Enroute charts are provided in their proven paper format for effective viewing of large areas.  The FX10 can also be used for reading e-books, newspapers and .pdf files, in addition to Jeppesen electronic charts.

The product was developed to respond to feedback from customers on a Jeppesen, PC based system, JeppView, which had “too much data”.  The use of the SolidFX eCard was also intended to result in a significant savings off the cost of using a Table PC with the JeppView system.

As General and Business Aviation providers continue to innovate, Jeppesen sees value in leveraging their digital database systems with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) solution providers to keep prices down and maintain common platforms.

The product is available online, via the SOLIDFX website at a special pre-order rate valid until August 31, 2009.  The full complement of Jeppesen electronic charts, including complete worldwide coverage, is available by subscription at a 10% discount when purchased along with the purchase of the portable e-reader device.

Jeppesen is also expanding its online training products and announced that it had received validation from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for Part 141 and FAA/Industry Training Standards (FITS) acceptance as a FITS flight syllabus.

In an effort support the training and knowledge needs of the Sport Pilot market, Jeppesen also announced the release of a new Sport Pilot online course, which follows the successful launch of a Private Pilot online training course earlier this year.
