Airborne 10.21.19: GoFly Prize, Avidyne Atlas FMS, True Blue Power

Also: Rolls Royce-Siemens Deal, SWAPA: Boeing 737 MAX, Amelia Earhart, 50th PC-24

Two years ago, GoFly launched the GoFly Prize and since then some 854 teams comprising 3,800 Innovators from 103 countries around the globe entered the $2+ million competition to literally change the world by creating the first-ever safe and quiet personal flyers.

The culminating event of this unprecedented challenge, the GoFly Final Fly Off, will be held on February 28-29, 2020, the days surrounding Leap Day, at the historic Moffett Federal Airfield located at NASA's Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley. Avidyne Corporation has introduced a new dzus-mounted Avidyne Atlas multifunction flight management system for turbine-class aircraft and helicopters. The Avidyne Atlas includes a Satellite-based Augmentation System (SBAS) GPS navigator with Required Navigation Performance (RNP) and Area Navigation (RNAV) capability, including LPV, LNAV/VNAV, LNAV-Only, and Approach Procedures with Vertical (APV) approach modes. The system also features a full QWERTY style keyboard, with Avidyne’s ‘Page & Tab’ and hybrid touch-screen user interface, allowing the pilot to get to any function in only one or two button pushes. The touch screen also provides full color Moving Map, plus geo-referenced Jeppesen Electronic Approach Charts and Airport Diagrams. True Blue Power equipment, including two DC-to-DC voltage converters, six DC-to-AC inverters and two intelligent batteries, now power Textron Aviation’s recently-certified Cessna Citation Longitude. The ultra-lightweight True Blue Power TB44 (44 amp-hour) lithium-ion batteries, weighing just 51.7 pounds (23.5 kg) per battery, reduce the aircraft’s empty weight by 60 pounds, adding payload capacity and increasing the aircraft’s cruising speed. The TB44 batteries’ capacity check schedule offers owners and operators the longest battery maintenance interval in its class and decreases service cost up to 90 percent. True Blue Power batteries are proven to deliver increased reliability and longer useful life. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
