AeroSports Update: Vintage Makes For Fun Aerobatics

The Vintage Aerobatic World Championship Is About Vintage Aircraft And Probably Some Vintage Pilots

Most of us associate aerobatic flying with airshows, and the airshows at EAA AirVenture certainly bring that to light. But an organization in Denmark feels that aerobatics should be as much about fun as it is about airplanes doing impossible maneuvers. The Vintage Aerobatic World Championships to be held in Denmark will show aerobatic flying as it was in the Golden Age of aviation.

On their website, vintageaerobatic.com, they say, “Flying straight and level is wonderful in our old aeroplanes. But sometimes you have this urge to fly inverted. Why not make an organized event out of it and enjoy the wonderful company of your fellow vintage pilots....the aeroplanes are vintage too! Therefore, we have decided to stage the first Vintage Aerobatic World Championship and you are hereby invited”

Here’s the way they describe the program: “Our beloved vintage airplanes are capable of performing the most beautiful maneuvers in the sky. Add the sound of a Gipsy Major, Renault or Tigre...or a radial. We can do air-ballet, soaring towards our piloting dreams and romantic flying desires.

“Every one of us loves to fly! Let’s do it together! Let’s connect and have some fun. Teach some old dogs new tricks, and give some new dogs useful tips. Build some fun-flying relations. Any type of aircraft is welcome – Tiger Moth, Chipmunk, Bücker Jungman, SAAB Safir, KZ-2, KZ-8, Klem 35, Stearman, Zlin, you name it. It just has to be built before 1955.

We will be battling for 4 BIG bottles of champagne. Three can be won by flying your Old-Timer with the greatest of ease and elegance. There will be three flight categories – you decide which suits your level of ambition.”

The website goes on to provide more details, and the event will be held at the Stauning Airport in Denmark on August 12 through the 14th. We realize it’s improbable that Americans will show up for this competition, but we are wondering if something like this is doable in the U.S. If it is, let us know so we can spread the word.

If any Yankee pilots are going to be there, be sure to clue us in.
