Government Of Canada Investing In Safety At The Rouyn-Noranda Airport

Will Spend Nearly $11 Million For Repaving Runways And Taxiways

Canadians, tourists and businesses benefit from safe and well-maintained airports. From visiting friends and family, to travelling to medical appointments, or getting goods to market, we rely on our local airports to support and sustain vibrant communities. These airports also provide essential air services including community resupply, air ambulance, search and rescue and forest fire response.

The Honourable Marc Garneau (pictured), Minister of Transport, has announced a Government of Canada investment of $10,931,156 (Canadian) to rehabilitate the airside surfaces at the Rouyn-Noranda Airport. The work includes a partial rehabilitation of pavement on Runway 08-26 and Taxiways A and B, and the rehabilitation of pavement on a section of the apron.

A well maintained runway, taxiway and apron, ensures safe usage by aircraft, passengers, and crews, and helps  protect costly airport safety assets, such as snow clearing equipment and aircraft rescue firefighting vehicles, during airport operations.

"Our Government supports local and regional airports because they are major contributors to the economic growth and social well-being of smaller communities across Canada. I know how important safety is for Rouyn-Noranda and all of Abitibi, and this investment will improve access to safe, efficient and accessible air transportation options," said Minister Garneau. "We will continue to deliver on our commitment to build safer, healthier and stronger communities in Rouyn-Noranda and throughout Canada."

This funding comes from Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP). Since the program started in 1995, the Government of Canada has invested more than $882.7 million for 948 projects at 186 airports across the country.

To date, the Rouyn-Noranda Airport has received more than $20.6 million in ACAP funding for 19 safety projects, including rehabilitation of airside surfaces, updates to electrical systems, new snow-clearing equipment and upgrades to runway lighting systems.
