Stamford, CT Officials Say ‘No’ To Helicopter Commuting

Company Had Asked City To Lift Ban On Helos Landing Within City Limits

A failed electric cable has slowed train service on the New Haven Line in the northeast corridor, which led an enterprising entrepreneur to ask the city of Stamford, CT to lift its ban on helicopters landing in the city so he could offer rides to frustrated commuters with a few extra dollars.

The city said "No."

The Advocate of Stamford reports that the company, EvoLux Transportation, wanted to offer seats at $300 each way to transport people between Connecticut and New York City while the train service returns to normal. It would have been a limited-time offer.

But it would have also required a waiver of a local ordinance that bans helicopters from landing within the city limits of Stamford ... with certain exceptions for emergency flights or VIP visits.

Local public safety officials said they would not expedite EvoLux owner Ray Leavitt's efforts to establish a temporary helipad in the city limits, and the idea remained grounded.
