Piper Tomahawk Down In Georgia

Mountain Impact Claims Pilot

A PA-38 white Piper Tomahawk, with only the pilot aboard, was reported missing Friday afternoon and found in the north GA mountains on Saturday, the Georgia Civil Air Patrol said. (file photo of similar aircraft, right.)

The plane apparently impacted mountainous terrain, killing the pilot.

The plane departed Hilton Head, SC on Thursday around 9:45 am, heading toward Cincinnati, OH, WLTX reported. The Patrol said the plane made a refueling stop in Barnwell, SC, at 11:19 am Thursday.

Authorities have not released the pilot's name at the request of the family.

The North Carolina Wing of Civil Air Patrol assisted with the search in the western portion of that state, deploying seven aircraft and two ground teams from an airport in Asheville, NC.
