The Go-to Guide for Affordable Flying Is (Finally) Returning

SportPlane Resource Guide (NG) Volume 3 is Bigger, Bolder, and a Whole Lot Easier to Carry

The SportPlane Resource Guide has, like many old kit builds, been collecting dust for years.

Over the next year, the book is finally getting a third edition…and this time, it's going digital -- uit HAS to... its simply too big to carry around. Aero-News Network is well on its way to debuting the new e-book with a renewed focus on affordable, entry-level flying machines.

The last edition clocked in at nearly 1,100 pages and featured more than 800 sport aircraft from around the world. This new ‘eSPRG’ is expected to blow past that, with over 2000 pages of specs, analysis, and directories. It spotlights both S-LSA and E-LSA options and includes equipment rundowns, how-to advice, and up-to-date directories (which are finally easier to update, thanks to the all-digital format). And, of course, it will adapt to all the changes coming our way thanks to MOSAIC.

The long-established reputation for brutal honesty carries into this project; sugarcoating doesn’t help when you’re picking out your first airplane. If a plane is overpriced, underbuilt, or overhyped, the book will tell you. If it’s a hidden gem, it’ll give it the attention it deserves. The SPRG aims to help readers cut through the fluff and find the machine that actually deserves a spot in their hangar.

This comeback couldn’t be more timely. With the Light Sport sector poised for major changes under the new MOSAIC rules, and the cost of flying constantly inching higher, there’s growing demand for clear, practical guidance in a part of aviation that desperately needs it.

"The 'Affordable Flyer' side of aviation has been victimized by extensive hype and a lot of misinformation... yet holds substantial promise for a desperately needed revitalization of the market... that being the case, we are committed to taking the very best of the SportPlane Resource Guide program and adapting it to the needs of those looking for an entry-level or affordable flying machine -- something that will get them into aviation and keep them in aviation," explained Aero-News Network Editor-in-Chief Jim Campbell.

ANN is also inviting feedback from the aviation community as the guide takes shape. If you’ve got ideas, questions, or gripes about the last edition, now’s your chance. Our team wants the introduction to sport flying to be fun instead of frustrating… and a little cheaper, too.
