Duncan Aviation Installs ADS-B Equipment In Challenger 850 SE

First Such Installation Completed In The United States

Duncan Aviation has completed and upgrade and installation of ADS-B Out avionics equipment on a Challenger 850 SE, which was an industry first in the United States. The Duncan Aviation Satellite Avionics Shop in Las Vegas, Nevada, upgraded the displays, GPS sensors, and software in the cockpit before upgrading the Rockwell Collins TDR-94D transponder, bringing the aircraft into compliance with the FAA’s ADS-B Out mandate, which has a mandate coming due in fewer than 36 months.

Using the STC approved for use in the United States by the FAA and developed by Avmax, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, and the STC for Wide Area Augmentation System/Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (WAAS/LPV) developed by Rockwell Collins, the Las Vegas shop readied the Challenger for WAAS/LPV and then performed the upgrades necessary for ADS-B Out.

“In addition to satisfying the mandated requirements for ADS-B Out, the techs at the Las Vegas shop saved our customer downtime and money by combining the upgrades and accomplishing the entire installation in the customer’s hangar in three weeks,” says Regional Avionics Sales Manager Mark Francetic.

Lyn Johnson, Director of Maintenance for Gaughan Flying in Las Vegas, downs his aircraft only once each year for maintenance. For convenience, and to get the best prices, he decided to complete all of the mandated upgrades at the same time.

“Prices will go up, so we decided not to wait,” says Johnson. “It was all on time and on budget, and everything works! That’s why I’ve done business with the Duncan Aviation’s Las Vegas Satellite Shop since it opened in 1995, and that’s why I’ll continue to go back. Everything works as advertised, just like everything Duncan Aviation does.”

“Eighteen of our Satellite Avionics Shops are more than just nearby; they actually have hangars at 18 of the busiest airports, giving our customers convenient, easy-to-access locations around the country,” says Matt Nelson. “Our customers can trust Duncan Aviation and any of its locally managed, brick-and-mortar Satellite Shops with all of their avionics needs. Now, with the mandate deadline for ADS-B Out rapidly approaching, we’d like our customers to know they can trust us with their ADS-B needs, as well. We’ve installed ADS-B equipment on everything from Cessna 172s to Boeing Business Jets (BBJs).”

Many Duncan Aviation customers have said they’re not quite ready to select and install the avionics equipment necessary to comply with the FAA’s ADS-B Out mandate. They have simultaneously expressed concern regarding the potential scarcity of capacity at service centers once they are ready. To help alleviate this uncertainty, Duncan Aviation has allocated two slots per month at every Duncan Aviation Satellite Avionics Shop in the country, exclusively for ADS-B installations through December 31, 2019.
