Airborne 02.24.20: New Bell EDAT, Jetman Upgrades, Amateur Rocket Fatality

Also: Artemis Lunar Exploration Program, X-57 Undergoes Tests, Airport Grants, Kuwait v Airbus

A bit of a surprise media leak made the ever-innovative folks at Bell Helicopter take the wraps off one of the more intriguing helicopter configurations we’ve seen in many years.

Marrying a Bell 429 to something of a quadcopter-style electric multi-rotor tail assembly, the Bell EDAT (Electrically Distributed Anti-Torque), may offer some exciting new capabilities and efficiencies to the already rugged 429 and other Bell airframes. When the sport aviation world was introduced to ‘Jetman’ inventor Yves Rossy, he showed the world what could happen when you strapped a few small hobby-jet engines to a wing and strapped it to a skydiver. The result was a joy to behold a few years back. But recently, things have taken on a whole new aspect with the continued development of the Jetman program to incorporate more powerful engines and a control system that has proven its ability to start from a standing position on the ground and achieve Vertical flight under its own power, thereafter transitioning to horizontal flight. Rocket science is serious business... and that turned out to be tragically true when an amateur rocket enthusiast was killed in a launch attempt over the weekend. Known as ‘Mad Mike’ Hughes, the rocket builder and ‘Flat Earth’ advocate had flown previous vehicles to altitudes as high as nearly 2000 feet, with difficulties. This flight was targeted for 5000 feet in order to prep the steam-powered, single place rocket vehicle for eventual flights to 60 miles of altitude and across the ‘Karmen line...’ otherwise known as the definition of the start of ‘space.’ All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
