Biplanes Land On Top Of One Another At Uncontrolled Airport

Pitts S-2B And V STAR Aircraft Involved, Both Pilots Survive

The pilot of a Pitts S-2B landed on top of a V STAR homebuilt biplane at Tullahoma Regional Airport in Tennessee Wednesday.

One of the pilots has been identified as Gary Meuer, who was aboard the V STAR and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by helicopter. Meuer had built the V STAR. His condition was listed as "stable", according to Scripps Media Service.

The other pilot was identified as Tom Hartvigsen. He was uninjured in the accident, and declined to talk to the media.

Tullahoma is an uncontrolled airport. Airport Manager John Glass said that the accident occurred at about 7:20 pm local time as both were landing.

There are four runways at Tullahoma. One was closed for about 20 hours, but the other three remained operational, according to Glass. The lengthy closure was because someone was called in to help separate the planes without further damaging the one that is salvageable.

The FAA issued a statement saying that it is investigating the accident.
