Airborne 01.05.18: P-40 Warbird Dustup, Shuster Bye-Bye!, Heuer Leaving IAC

Also: FAA Overflight Fee, Runway Collision SAFO, USAIG 90th Anniversary, Piaggio Aerospace

The restoration of an RAF P-40 Kittyhawk that was found in the African desert is causing a great deal of consternation among aviation historians, but there is apparently nothing that can be done.

The airplane was found in May, 2012 by Polish oil company worker Jakub Perka. He came across the airplane which had been crash-landed some 70 years earlier. It was considered to be in "time capsule condition." Along with the airplane, a crude shelter made of the pilot's parachute was discovered at the site, suggesting that Flight Sergeant Dennis Copping had survived the accident but later died of exposure in the desert. His body was never found. No friend of the private aviation world, U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA), Chairman of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has decided to not seek reelection to the seat in Congress as his term as chairman comes to a close. We are, as yet, unsure what effect this will have on his aggressive push for ATC Privatization. Citing personal health issues, IAC President Mike Heuer has announced  he plans to step down from the IAC presidency no later than March 19th,  2017. Mike has served as IAC President since the summer of 2014 and was  also the club's leader from 1981 to 1990. He has served in virtually  all IAC officer and director positions since the club was founded in 1970 and carries IAC membership number 4. His father, Bob Heuer was the  first President of the organization and Mike has devoted much of his  adult life to volunteer positions within the organization. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
