AMA Drone Report 07.11.19: AMA Exec Council, DJI Objects, More FAA Restrictions

Also: Oshkosh Awaits!, MMC Partners W/Yuneec, Drone Strike Assessment, No Drone... Turtle!

Late last month, the AMA Executive Council and the Government Affairs team took a trip to Washington, D.C. to advocate for our hobby.

Throughout these meetings, AMA emphasized their commitment to safety and education -- also highlighting examples of how flying model aircraft is a pathway to STEM-related to careers and the work we do to support local charities. Importantly, AMA discussed the upcoming FAA rule-makings for recreational UAS, and were encouraged by the positive dialogue. The FAA recognizes the importance of the model aviation community and wants to continue our longstanding partnership. On Capitol Hill, members of Congress pledged support to AMA and stand ready to weigh-in with the FAA on our behalf, as needed. DJI has released an open letter in which it expresses "deep disappointment" with the way drones were depicted in two reports televised by the BBC. The reports, one which aired in April and the second on July 1, focused on the dangers posed by drones operating near commercial airports. The BBC reports that DJI asserts that the reports were based on "hearsay" and say the broadcaster was not true to its public charge to "inform, educate and entertain." The FAA has announced new airspace restrictions effective today, July 11, 2019, on UAS attempting to fly over national security sensitive locations. The FAA has been cooperating with federal partners to address concerns about malicious drone operations by using the agency’s existing authority under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 99.7 (14 CFR § 99.7), Special Security Instructions, to establish UAS specific flight restrictions over select, national security sensitive locations. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
