Sustained Attention Training in Unmanned & Remote Navigation Is Next Generation Adaptive Training For Drone Operators
Adaptive Immersion Technologies (AIT) has developed featuring adaptive training technologies designed to help drone operators manage the overwhelming task saturation and information load of UAS systems. Sponsored by the Department of Defense Small Business Innovative Research program, AIT developed Sustained Attention Training in Unmanned & Remote Navigation (SATURN) – a game-based training system, designed to help UAS operators develop and retain attention control skills for mission performance.
SATURN uses a persistent performance measurement capability to constantly adapt the training content. Based on the unique cognitive skill strengths and weaknesses measured for each individual at multiple time intervals, the system uses artificial intelligence techniques to craft the scenario mods that push the user’s skill level to the next level. The embedded AI enables SATURN to recommend training content with minimal instructor intervention, so trainees can practice frequently and independently on different missions and operational requirements.
SATURN’s AI-driven skill assessment and learner personalization technology is designed to enhance operators’ overall attention during unmanned operations. By frequently practicing training content—engineered to provide the optimal level of challenge—operators can learn to proactively respond to changes in the operational tempo.
SATURN was developed initially as a platform-agnostic, multi-purpose trainer. The DoD is now sponsoring spin-off technologies to support training for individual UAS platforms and commercial drones.
