Google Solar-Powered UAV Down Last Month In New Mexico

NTSB Is Reportedly Investigating The Accident

The NTSB is looking into an accident which occurred May 1 in New Mexico involving Google's Solara 50 solar-powered UAV.

The unmanned aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from a private airfield near Albuquerque, NM, according to engadget.com.

Bloomberg reports that Google spokeswoman Courtney Hohne said the company is still "optimistic about the potential of solar-powered planes to help deliver connectivity." Google acquired Titan Aerospace, a company developing solar powered High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) UAVs, for their potential to serve as relays for delivering Internet service to remote places.

The NTSB has not yet posted a preliminary report on its website. Titan has registered 50 UAVs with the FAA, including the one that went down, according to Bloomberg.
