Maintenance Accident Bends Three Planes In Baton Rouge

Scratch At Least One CRJ From ASA Fleet

Well, this is one way for mainline carriers to trim the number of regional jets from their fleets. A young technician's mistake resulted in a three-plane ground collision at Baton Rouge Metro Airport (BTR) Monday night.

WAFB-9 in Baton Rouge reports the unnamed mechanic started up the turbofan on an Atlantic Southeast Airlines CRJ, to slowly spin up the engine's compressor blades for cleaning. Instead, the engine spooled up to full power... sending the plane cartwheeling around, into two other parked CRJs in the maintenance hangar.

The entire incident took five seconds, according to witnesses. Fortunately, there was no fire, and neither the young tech nor her 13 ASA coworkers in the hangar were injured.

At least one of the planes is totalled, however.
