Pentagon: Chinese Fighter Jet Makes Close Pass To P-8 Poseidon

Military Spokesman Says Armed Aircraft Came Within 30 Feet Of U.S. Airplane In International Airspace

The Pentagon says a Chinese fighter jet with a full compliment of weapons came within 30 feet of a U.S. P-8 Poseidon August 19.

USA Today reports that, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Chinese pilot acted in an "aggressive and unprofessional manner" when he or she made several passes near the U.S. reconnaissance airplane in international airspace about 135 miles east of Hainan island.

On one of the passes, the Chinese pilot reportedly turned the airplane so that the P-8 pilot could see the full compliment of weapons carried by the fighter.

The Pentagon says it is the fourth time this year that a Chinese warplane has made a close pass to a U.S. military aircraft.
