Stolen Airplane Down In Concord, CA

Only Person On Board Fatally Injured In The Accident

A Cessna 172 (similar aircraft pictured) reported stolen from Buchanan Field Airport (KCCR) in Contra Costa County, CA, was found crashed into the bank of a canal west of Fresno, CA last week. The sole occupant of the aircraft was fatally injured in the accident.

The airplane was reported stolen by its owner, though the Contra Costa Times reports he did not do so as soon as he noticed it missing because he thought it was being serviced. He had last seen the plane Friday, February 3rd, and made the report the next day. The accident site was discovered mid afternoon on Sunday, February 5th.

Television station KTVU identifies the pilot, who reportedly did not hold a pilot certificate, as 52-year-old Ray Pirro. The plane apparently struck power lines before going down. The N-number on the aircraft had been altered.
