Airborne-Unmanned 08.13.19: 'HAWK30' Authorized, UKCG Trial, Public Safety Drone

Also: SimActive, Atlas Multi-Drone System, UAS Public Safety Workshop, San Pablo Police Drone Unit

HAPSMobile has received a Certificate of Authorization from the FAA to fly “HAWK30,” a solar-powered unmanned aircraft, assembled in April 2019, to provide a stratospheric telecommunications platform system, in the stratosphere above the Hawaiian island of Lanai.

As part of collaborative activities with the PPUTRC (Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex), which is run by public university research institutions, HAPSMobile has been working with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Hawaii to conduct stratospheric test flights. The University of Alaska Fairbanks applied to the FAA on behalf of the three parties, and received authorization. The UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) is soliciting proposals from drone operators for a demonstration program to aid SAR and ship surveillance missions of the southwest coast of England. The MCA has published a request for proposals for a contract valued at about $1.2 million. The deadline for applications is August 19. The solicitation indicates that UAVs could help cut SAR and other costs while making them more efficient. But it also indicates that the U.K.'s rules concerning BVLOS operation would have to be eased or waived for the purpose of the demonstration. Oneida County, NY Sheriff Robert Maciol and members of the Sheriff’s Office, along with Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. and Oneida County Aviation Commissioner Chad Lawrence recently announced the formation of a new unit within the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office will be able to use this new resource to protect the lives and property of citizens and first responders as well as being able to detect possible dangers that could not otherwise be seen from the ground. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
